Deployment Operationalisation Engineer

Job Purpose

The Deployment Operationalisation Engineer will lead AFRINIC’s efforts to drive the adoption and deployment of key Internet technologies among network operators across the region, including IPv6, RPKI, and the Internet Routing Registry (IRR). The role focuses on translating strategy into practical implementation and supporting stakeholders in operationalising these technologies. This position reports to the Head of Capacity Building.

  • Drive the implementation and adoption of key Internet technologies such as IPv6, RPKI, IRR, and DNSSEC by:
    • Developing design and deployment documentation to support implementation
    • Structuring and guiding implementation projects
    • Providing consultative support before and throughout project execution
    • Assisting with complex troubleshooting efforts that benefit the broader technical community
  • Promote and advocate for best operational practices in network management (e.g. MANRS, BCP 38).
  • Collaborate with the training team to review, update, and deliver training programmes that support and accelerate technology deployment.

Resource Contact Person for Deployment Initiatives
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to engineers and organisations to support and accelerate deployment initiatives.
  • Stay up to date with relevant industry standards and developments (e.g. IETF) and translate them into practical, actionable guidance.
  • Develop and curate resources (e.g. blogs, videos, tools, templates, and case studies) to support engineers in deploying technologies.
  • Evaluate and test network technologies and products relevant to the region to inform deployment strategies.
  • Develop detailed deployment case studies highlighting best practices and lessons learned.
  • Design and deliver presentations tailored to both technical and business audiences to promote and support technology adoption.

  • Monitor and evaluate engagement across deployment initiatives and prepare regular reports on outcomes and impact.
  • Track, analyse, and communicate progress on the deployment of key technologies.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all activities, processes, and deliverables.

  • Ensure that all processes are clearly documented as per ISO 9001 standards.

Qualifications and Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field.

  • 4 - 5 years of experience running a network (ISP, enterprise or campus)

  • Knowledge and experience equivalent to CCNP and LPIC-2

  • Ability to independently research and implement technology without supervision

  • Excellent communication skills - writing, speaking and presentations abilities

  • Highly organised and can work without supervision

  • Good organising and planning skills
  • Ability to enhance operating efficiency and effectiveness through results and an analytical mind that foster performance improvement.
  • Experience with developing processes, standards and network testing, writing test plans and producing network test reports.
  • Ability to independently research and implement technology without supervision.
  • Good understanding of the nomenclature, the ecosystem and the operating culture of the Internet especially in developing countries.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools and Applications (Egroupware, Jira, Confluence).

  • The above position is offered on a full-time basis for an indeterminate duration and will be aligned to AFRINIC's established grading structure and corresponding salary scale. Appointment shall be subject to completion of a satisfactory probationary period.
  • The position is based in Mauritius. The successful candidate will be required to work primarily from this location.
